New Story Scene
June stepped through the doors and folded her umbrella, shaking the rain off and stuffing it into her purse. She took a few steps in and stopped, looking around at the place she’d been dozens of times before but now seemed so different.
Slowly, she walked past the mall shops, reading the names of each of them. Macy’s, Vans, Auntie Anne’s Pretzels, Swarovski. Stores that held so much meaning for her. Stores that held so many memories.
Stopping by the fountain she and Hayden had sat by so many times, she blinked back tears. One slipped out and splattered onto the tile.
She sat down, alone, on the bench by the fountain and watched people walk by. A woman with a low-cut shirt and a mini skirt rushed by, holding bags to Abercrombie and Hollister. A grey haired old man holding the hand of a little girl in a fluffy dress smiled and waved to June, bending down to tell the little girl to wave too. A teenage guy in a baseball cap nodded and gave her a half grin. A harried-looking pregnant woman pushing a stroller met June’s gaze for a split second then continued on to wherever she was going.
Where were they going? What were their stories? Was the old man the girl’s grandpa, taking her to buy candy and a toy? Was the teenage guy going to meet his girlfriend at the movie? Did he even have a girlfriend? Had his girlfriend dumped him last night and he was trying to figure out what to do with his free time?
She sat there for she didn’t know how long, watching a sea of people flood by. They met her gaze with a half smile and a nod, signifying they were all right. Had Hayden done that? Smiled and nodded as if everything was going perfectly, even though he was being destroyed inside? How many of these people were hurting and broken, collapsing from the inside?
June ached for them. Did anybody care? Were they lost, and afraid, and wanting someone to know what was really going on, even though they were too proud to tell anyone?
Abruptly, June stood up and walked back out into the rain, not even bothering with her umbrella, and headed back home.
